Rare Staffordshire Figure of Abolitionist, John Brown and Two Rescued Slave Children Devotion an important first-hand account ofA very fine example of a c. 1860 Staffordshire, Whiteware figure of anti slavery, abolitionist John Brown. Standing with two young black girls, rescued from slavery, the left bearing the drooping dress to expose the chest, typical of "tragic" female illustration of the 19th century. This theme was repeated in the depiction of Hagar in illustrated Bibles, etc. The figure hand painted, with each and every example unique. I've never seen two the same.
